Dental Emergencies

With good preventive dental care, dental emergencies can often be avoided. If you have a dental emergency call our Coquitlam dental clinic at (604) 552 – 2241. Every effort will be made to see you as soon as possible to alleviate your pain and set up an appointment to complete the required treatment. Your dental care is important to us.

Here are some practical tips for handling dental emergencies until you can get into the dental office:

  • In the case of minor swelling, you may take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) for their inflammatory components, like ibuprofen
  • Please note that rubbing aspirin on your gums to numb an aching tooth will do more harm than good. Aspirin contains salicylic acid, which can burn and damage gum tissue. Try pain-relieving gels like Anbesol or Orajel.
  • For a minor toothache you can benefit of from rinsing your mouth with salt water or dabbing some clove oil directly on the sore tooth. Also try the numbing power in cooled peppermint tea.
  • If you are unfortunate enough to knock out a tooth, shake off the debris (rinsing or scrubbing could remove important periodontal ligament), place it in a container of milk or back in its socket and try to reach the dentist within 30 minutes.
  • If you break tooth, gently shake off surface dirt and keep the broken piece. Even if the piece can’t be bonded back to the original tooth, it can be used to help re-create the look of that tooth.
  • If you have something wedged between your teeth, gently floss or brush. If the object cannot be dislodged by that treatment and the surrounding gum begins to swell, make an appointment with your dentist. A bit of broken filling or chipped enamel can throw your bite off and make you uncomfortable. Popcorn husks are one of the most common offenders and occasionally need to be removed by a dentist.
  • If you lose a filling, do not try to put the old filling back in the tooth. As a temporary measure, stick a piece of sugarless gum into the cavity (sugar-filled gum will cause pain) or use an over-the-counter dental cement. See your dentist as soon as possible
  • If you lose a crown, cover the hole with temporary material. If you want to try and salvage the crown, you can use Vaseline, denture adhesive or over-the-counter temporary dental cement available in pharmacies to put the crown back in place until you can reach a dentist. Visit the dentist as soon as possible.
  • If you cut your lip or have a swollen cheek, use cold compresses on the area to keep any swelling down.

No toothache will heal on its own. A toothache is a dental problem that needs to be treated as soon as possible.
